Why this level
The starting point of all leadership
Leadership does not begin in the meeting room - it begins inside you. The bigger the responsibility, the more your own foundation carries you, or fails you: anyone who wants to have impact over years needs more than methods. They need a body and a mind that keep up.
That is why My Self stands at the beginning of Peter von Wartenberg’s model: without a clear self, leading a team or a business remains a facade. Only those who lead themselves can credibly lead others.
The topics of this level
Six resources, one foundation
Health
Health is not a private matter - it is your most important leadership resource: anyone carrying responsibility for the long run has to stay physically and mentally strong.
Resilience
Building inner stability so you stay capable of acting under pressure, through setbacks and in uncertainty.
Meditation
Regular stillness as training for a clear head: perceive, sort, decide - instead of leading in reaction mode.
Energy
Managing energy deliberately instead of merely spending it: recognising what gives you strength and what drains it - and shaping your day accordingly.
Focus
Attention is the scarcest resource in leadership. Focus means choosing what matters and consistently limiting distraction.
Purpose
Knowing what you lead for. A sound why gives your decisions direction - especially when things get hard.
The six topics do not stand side by side - together they hold a centre: your own ability to lead.

Where this comes from
Responsibility, before it was called leadership
Peter’s path began before business: service with the German armed forces, among other roles as a military police officer, and among other places in Washington D.C. A formative time in which he experienced responsibility, discipline and the value of trust at close range.
That is where he came across the guiding sentence “Serve and Protect.” He added the decisive thought himself, over the course of his working life: “Learn to” - learn first, then lead. That is exactly where this level starts.
Because anyone who wants to take on responsibility has to be willing to learn first.
